Mark 1:14-17

A (14) Now after that John was put in prison, JESUS came  INTO GALILEE,

B (14) preaching THE GOSPEL

C (14) OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD,

D (15) And saying, The time is fulfilled,

C′ (15) and THE KINGDOM OF GOD is at hand:

B′ (15) repent ye, and believe THE GOSPEL.

A′ (16) Now as he walked by the sea OF GALILEE, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. (17) And JESUS said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.

Mark 10:1-12

A. 1 And he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again. (2) And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.(3) And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? (4) And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. (5) And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.

B.(6) But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.(7) For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;

C.(8) And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.

B’.(9) What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

A’.(10) And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.(11) And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. (12) And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.

Mark 1:16-34

A  (16)  Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw  Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. (17)  And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. (18)  And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him. (19)  And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.(20)  And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

B  (21)  And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.

C  (22)  And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

D  (23)  And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,

E  (24)  Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us?

X  I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

E’  (25)  And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.

D’  (26)  And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.

C’  (27)  And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. (28)  And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

B’  (29)  And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue,

A’  (29b) they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

2A. But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.

2B. 31 And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up;

2A’. and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.

3A. 32 And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.

3B. 33 And all the city was gathered together at the door.

3A’. 34 And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.

Mark 6:2-13

A. (2a)  And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue:

B. and many hearing him were astonished, saying,

C  (2b)  From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?

D  (3a)  Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us?

E  (3b)  And they were offended at him.

D’  (4)  But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

C’  (5)  And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.

B’  (6)  And he marvelled because of their unbelief.

A’. And he went round about the villages, teaching.

2A  (7)  And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;

2B. 8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: 9 But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats.

2B’. 10 And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place. 11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

2A’. 12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent. 13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

Mark 12:28-34

Edited in the light of Nick’s comment – thanks Nick.

A.( 28) And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together,

B. and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?

C.(29) And Jesus answered him,

1.The first of all the commandments is,Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord. (30) And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

2. (31) And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

D. There is none other commandment greater than these.

C’.(32) And the scribe said unto him,

1′. Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he: (33) And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength,

2′. and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

B’.(34) And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God.

A’. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

Mark 10:17-31

A. 17And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

B. 18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

C. 19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.

B’. 20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.

A’. 21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.  22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

Note: if the above is correct Jesus’ reference to “none good” contrasts with the man’s self confidence in his works of obedience. The central section – the list of commandments omits the command about covetousness, which was of course the problem for this man.

(From Ruth)

2A (23) And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

2B (24) And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them,

2C (24b) Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

2D (25) It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle,

2C’ (25b) than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

2B’ (26) And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?

2A’ (27) And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

3A. 28 Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.

3B. 29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s,

3B’. 30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

3A’. 31 But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

Mark 10:46-52

(From Pete)

A. And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.

B. a. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,
b. he began to cry out, and say,
c. Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
a’. And many charged him that he should hold his peace:
b’. but he cried the more a great deal,
c’. Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.

C. And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called.

D. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise he calleth thee.

 E. And he, casting away his garment,

D’. rose and  came   to Jesus.

C’. And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?

B’. The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.

A. a. And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way;
b. thy faith hath made thee whole.
b’. And immediately he received his sight,
a’. and followed Jesus in the way.

Mark 10:32-45

(From Pete)

A.(32)  And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them:and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him. (33) Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: (34) And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

B. (35) And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire. (36) And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?–

C. (37) They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.

D. (38) But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

E. (39) And they said unto him, We can.

D’. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:

C’. (40) But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.

B’. (41) And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John.

A’. (42) But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. (43) But so shall it not be among you:but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: (44) And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. (45) For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
