Psalms

PSALM 1:1-2:4

A (1:1) Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor SITTETH in the seat of the scornful.

B (2,3) But his delight is in the law of Yahweh; and in his law doth HE MEDITATE <01897> day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

C (4,5) THE UNGODLY are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore THE UNGODLY shall not stand in the judgment,

D (5) nor sinners in the congregation OF THE RIGHTEOUS.

D1 (6 ) For Yahweh knoweth the way OF THE RIGHTEOUS:

C1 (6) but the way of THE UNGODLY shall perish.

B1 (2:1-3) Why do the heathen rage, and the people IMAGINE <01897> a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against Yahweh, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

A1 (2:4) HE THAT SITTETH in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

PSALM 2:5-12

A (5,6) Then shall he speak unto them in HIS WRATH, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

B (7) I will declare the decree: YAHWEH hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

C (8) Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts OF THE EARTH for thy possession.

D (9) Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

C1 (10) Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges OF THE EARTH.

B1 (11) Serve YAHWEH with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

A1 (12) Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when HIS WRATH is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

PSALM 7:7-12

A (7) So shall the congregation of the people compass thee about: for their sakes therefore RETURN <07725> thou on high.

B (8) Yahweh shall judge the people: JUDGE me, O Yahweh, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me.

C (9) Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth THE HEARTS <03826> and reins.

D (10) My defence is of God,

C1 (10) which saveth the upright in HEART <03820>.

B1 (11) God JUDGETH the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.

A1 (12) If HE TURN <07725> not, he will whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it ready.

PSALM 7:12-16

A (12) IF HE TURN <07725> NOT, he will whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it ready.

B (13) He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; HE ORDAINETH <06466> his arrows against the persecutors.

C (14) Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.

B1 (15) He made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which HE MADE <06466>.

A1 (16) His mischief SHALL RETURN <07725> upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate.

PSALM 8:1-9

A (1) O YAHWEH OUR LORD, HOW EXCELLENT IS THY NAME IN ALL THE EARTH!

B (1-3) who hast set thy glory above THE HEAVENS <08064>. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. When I consider thy HEAVENS <08064>,

C (3) THE WORK of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

D (4,5) What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

C1 (6) Thou madest him to have dominion over THE WORKS of thy hands;

B1 (6-8) thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of THE AIR <08064>, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

A1 (9) O YAHWEH OUR LORD, HOW EXCELLENT IS THY NAME IN ALL THE EARTH!

PSALM 9:4-8

A (4) For thou hast maintained my right and my cause; thou satest in the throne JUDGING <08199> RIGHT <06664>.

B (5) Thou hast rebuked the heathen, THOU HAST DESTROYED <06> the wicked, thou hast put out their name for ever and ever.

C (6) O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end: and thou hast destroyed cities;

B1 (6,7) their memorial IS PERISHED <06> with them. But Yahweh shall endure for ever:

A1 (7,8) he hath prepared his throne for judgment. And HE SHALL JUDGE < 08199> the world in RIGHTEOUSNESS <06664>, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.

PSALM 10:1-5

A (1) Why standest thou afar off, O Yahweh? why hidest thou thyself IN TIMES <06256> of trouble?

B (2) The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in THE DEVICES <04209> that they have imagined.

C (3) For the wicked boasteth of his heart’s desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom Yahweh abhorreth.

B1 (4) The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all HIS THOUGHTS <04209>.

A1 (5) His ways are ALWAYS <06256> grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them.

PSALM 10:6-11

A (6,7) HE HATH SAID IN HIS HEART, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.

B (8) He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against THE POOR <02489>.

C (9) He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait TO CATCH THE POOR <06041>:
C1 (9) he doth CATCH THE POOR <06041>, when he draweth him into his net.

B1 (10) He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that THE POOR <02426> <02489> <02489> may fall by his strong ones.

A1 (11) HE HATH SAID IN HIS HEART, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it.

PSALM 10:10-14

A (10) He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that THE POOR <02426> <02489> <02489> may fall by his strong ones.

B (11) HE HATH SAID IN HIS HEART, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it.

C (12) Arise, O Yahweh; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble.

B1 (13) Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? HE HATH SAID IN HIS HEART, Thou wilt not require it.

A1 (14) Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: THE POOR <02489> committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.

PSALM 11:1-5

A (1) In Yahweh put I my trust: how say ye TO MY SOUL, Flee as a bird to your mountain?

B (2) For, lo, THE WICKED bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart.

C (3) If the foundations be destroyed, what can THE RIGHTEOUS do?

D (4) Yahweh is in his holy temple, Yahweh’s throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.

C1 (5) Yahweh trieth THE RIGHTEOUS:

B1 (5) but THE WICKED and him that loveth violence

A1 (5) HIS SOUL hateth.

PSALM 13:1-6

A (1) How long wilt thou forget me, O YAHWEH? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?

B (2) How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in MY HEART <03824> daily?

C (2) how long shall MINE ENEMY be exalted over me?

D (3) Consider and hear me, O Yahweh my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

C1 (4) Lest MINE ENEMY say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.

B1 (5) But I have trusted in thy mercy; MY HEART <03820> shall rejoice in thy salvation.

A1 (6) I will sing unto YAHWEH, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.

PSALM 16:8-11

A (8) I have set Yahweh always before me: because he is at MY RIGHT HAND, I shall not be moved.

B (9) Therefore my heart IS GLAD <08055>, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.

C (10) For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

B1 (11) Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of JOY<08057>;

A1 (11) at THY RIGHT HAND there are pleasures for evermore.

PSALM 18:8-15

A (8) There went up a smoke OUT OF HIS NOSTRILS, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.

B (9,10) He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet. And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of THE WIND <07307>.

C (11) He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark WATERS and thick clouds of the skies.

D (12) At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, HAIL STONES AND COALS OF FIRE.

E (13) Yahweh also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice;

D1 (13,14) HAIL STONES AND COALS OF FIRE. Yea, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them.

C1 (15) Then the channels of WATERS were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O Yahweh,

B1 (15) at the blast OF THE BREATH <07307>

A1 (15) OF THY NOSTRILS.

PSALM 18:20-24

A (20) Yahweh rewarded me ACCORDING TO MY RIGHTEOUSNESS; ACCORDING TO THE CLEANNESS OF MY HANDS

B (20) HATH HE RECOMPENSED ME.

C (21) For I HAVE KEPT the ways of Yahweh, and have not wickedly departed from my God.

D (22) For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me.

C1 (23) I was also upright before him, and I KEPT myself from mine iniquity.
A1 (24) ACCORDING TO MY RIGHTEOUSNESS, ACCORDING TO THE CLEANNESS OF MY HANDS in his eyesight.

PSALM 18:32-39

A (32) It is God THAT GIRDETH ME WITH STRENGTH, and maketh my way perfect.

B (33,34) He maketh MY FEET <07272> like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places. He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.

C (35) Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.

B1 (36-38) Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, that my feet <07166> did not slip. I have pursued mine enemies, and overtaken them: neither did I turn again till they were consumed. I have wounded them that they were not able to rise: they are fallen under MY FEET <07272>.

A1 (39) FOR THOU HAST GIRDED ME WITH STRENGTH unto the battle: thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me.

PSALM 20:1-9

A (1) Yahweh hear thee in THE DAY <03117> of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee; Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion;

B (3) REMEMBER all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah.

C (4) Grant thee according to thine own heart, and FULFIl all thy counsel.

D (5) We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners:

C1 (5) Yahweh FULFIL all thy petitions.

B1 (6,7) Now know I that Yahweh saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but WE WILL REMEMBER the name of Yahweh our God. They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.

A1 (9) Save, Yahweh: let the king hear us WHEN <03117> we call.

PSALM 21:1-7

A (1) THE KING shall joy in thy strength, O YAHWEH;

B (1) and IN THY SALVATION how greatly shall he rejoice!

C1 (4) He asked life of thee, and THOU GAVEST it him, even length of days for ever and ever.

B1 (5,6) His glory is great IN THY SALVATION: honour and majesty hast thou laid upon him. For thou hast made him most blessed for ever: thou hast made him exceeding glad with thy countenance.

C (5) For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret OF HIS TABERNACLE shall he hide me;

D (5) HE SHALL SET ME UP <07311> upon a rock.

D (6) And now shall mine head BE LIFTED UP <07311> above mine enemies round about me:

C1 (6) therefore will I offer in HIS TABERNACLE sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto Yahweh.

B1 (7,8) Hear, O Yahweh, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me. When thou saidst, SEEK YE my face;

A1 (8) MY HEART said unto thee, Thy face, Yahweh, will I seek.

Note this psalm has “salvation” in verses 1 and 9 and it is tempting to treat this as part of the chiasm but the pattern finishes when “seek” occurs again but AFTER “heart” in verse 8.

PSALM 28:6-9

A (6) BLESSED BE Yahweh, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications.

B (7) Yahweh is MY STRENGTH and my shield;

E (9) mine eye IS CONSUMED <06244> with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.

F (10) For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing:

E1 (10) my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones ARE CONSUMED <06244>.

D1 (11) I was a reproach among all mine ENEMIES <06887>,

C1 (11) but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine ACQUAINTANCE <03045>:

Cast thy burden upon YAHWEH, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

A1 (23) But thou, O God, SHALT BRING THEM DOWN into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

Version Two

B1 (22) Cast thy burden upon YAHWEH, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

A1 (23) But thou, O God, SHALT BRING THEM DOWN into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

Comment:
The close pairings of “peace” and “hear” within the framework of going “down” and “Yahweh” indicate two separate central clauses. Both versions are presumably right – they are both clearly there in the text. Another point to note is that “selah” has been treated as a boundary marker to divide the text. Is this approach right? In the English versions verse 19 has “selah” in the middle. Maybe this is a case of where the verse divisions could be better.

A1 (17) I cried unto him with MY MOUTH, and he was extolled with my tongue.

Comment:

Is this chiasmus as suggested here `rightly divided’? The central clause may appear to be `forced’ on the structure. Surely it should at least be “Come and hear all ye that fear God”? However, the Hebrew has “and I will declare” before “all ye that fear”. The phrase “Come and hear” is separated from the following words by “and”.

In fact there is no “and” between “Come” and “hear”. It’s a distinct appeal to `Come! Hear!’ This contrasts with the psalmist speaking in verses 14 and 17. God had “done” in response to what the psalmist had spoken and done but the emphasis in this section as indicated by the chiastic structure is on the readers hearing.

B1 (13) Oh that MY PEOPLE HAD HEARKENED unto me, AND ISRAEL had walked in my ways!

D1 (14) O GOD <0430>, the proud are risen against me, and the assemblies of violent men have sought after my soul; and have not set thee before them.

C1 (15) But thou, O LORD,

B1 (15) art a God <0410> full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and TRUTH.

B1 (8-10) O YAHWEH God of hosts, who is a strong YAHWEH like unto thee? or TO THY FAITHFULNESS round about thee? Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.
