Luke 7:36-50*

A.(36) And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house and sat down to meat.

B.(37) And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner,  when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house,

C. brought an alabaster box of ointment,(38) and stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

D.(39) Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

F.(40) And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.

G. (41) There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. (42) And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both.

H. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?

G’.(43) Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most.

F’. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.

D’. (44) And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, seest thou this woman?

C’.  I entered into thine house,

a. thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.

b. (45) Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.

c. (46) My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.

B’.(47)

a. Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven;

b. for she loved much:

c. but to whom little is forgiven,

b’. the same loveth little.

a. 48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.

A’.(49) And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? (50) And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.

John 14:16-26

A.(16) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter,

B. that he may abide with you for ever; (17) Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

C.(18)  I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

D.(19) Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

E.(20) At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

F.(21) He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me:

E’. and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

D’. (22) Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

C’. 23Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

B’.(250 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

A'(26) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

B) The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat (v13)
A) And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field (v14)

Jeremiah 38

I was wondering whether there was a chiasm between Jeremiah being cast into the dungeon, and then him being pulled out of the dungeon, in Jeremiah 38:6-13. Here is a suggestion:

A) Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him int the dungeon of Malchijah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison (v6)
B) And they let down Jeremiah with cords (v6)
C) Now when Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king’s house… (v7)
D) …Heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon (v7)
E) Ebed-Melech went forth out of the king’s house, and spake unto the king, saying (v8)
F) He is like to die for hunger in the place where he is (v9)
G) Then the king commanded Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon (v10)
f) Before he die (v10)
e) So Ebed-Melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king (v11)
d) And took thence old cast clouts and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah (v11)
c) And Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah… (v12)
b) So they drew up Jeremiah with cords (v13)
a) And Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison (v13)

Matthew 20:17-21:1

In this proposal the two disciples are paralleled with the two blind men!

A.(17) And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, (18) Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, (19) And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him:and the third day he shall rise again.

B.(20) Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. (21) And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. (22) But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. (23) And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with:but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.

C.(24) And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. (25) But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.

D.(26) But it shall not be so among you:but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;

E. (27) And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:

D’.(28) Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

C’.(29) And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. (30) And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. (31) And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace:but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.

B’.(32) And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you? (33) They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. (34) So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes:and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.

A’.(21:1)  And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples …

Daniel 2:29-36

A.(29) As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter:and he that revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass. 30 But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.

B. (31) Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.

C.(32) This image’s head was of fine gold,

D. his breast and his arms of silver,

E. his belly and his thighs of brass,

F.(33) His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.

G.(34) Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image  upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.

F’.(35) Then was the iron, the clay,

E’. the brass,

D’. the silver,

C’. and the gold,

B’. broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them:and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

A’.(36) This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.

Daniel 9:1-19

A. 1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans;

B. 2 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.

C. 3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes.

A. 4 And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments; 5 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:

B. 6 Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

C. 7 O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day;

D. to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.

C’. 8 O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face,

B’. to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers,

A’. because we have sinned against thee.

2B. 9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him; 10 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

2C. 11 Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice;

2B’. therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God,

2A’. because we have sinned against him.

3B. 12 And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem.

3C. 13 As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.

3B’. 14 Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice.

3A’. 15 And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.

Note: This is a very helpful outline because it emphasises that all Israel have sinned by departing from the voice of God, and still they hadn’t sought forgiveness. Daniel therefore prays on their behalf.

Is there an ABA’ pattern in his final words which emphasises the forgiveness and restoration will depend upon recognising God’s righteousness and for the Lord’s sake?

A. 16 O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.

B. 17 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake.

A’. 18 O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name:for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies. 19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.

B) And they let down Jeremiah with cords (v6). And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

C) Now when Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king’s house  (v7)

E) Ebed-Melech went forth out of the king’s house, and spake unto the king, saying, (v8)

c) And Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so. (v12)

Jeremiah 26:6-9

A.(6) Then will I make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.

B.(7)So the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD.

C.(8) Now it came to pass, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak unto all the people,

B’. that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him, saying, Thou shalt surely die.

A’.(9) Why hast thou prophesied in the name of the LORD, saying, This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant? And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.
