I am grateful to have found the above. I spent quite a long time trying to work out the structure of the passage in 2020 and set it aside without resolution. It is full of repetitions and has in the passed been written off as hopelessly confused, a mixture of different traditions clumsily put together. But if we pay attention to the speaker I think we can see a broad structure emerging. Three times YHWH speaks to Joshua, and this divides the narrative into three main parts, with an introduction and a summary conclusion. The first and the third communication have to do with the ark going into and out of the Jordan. Between these commands there is the instruction about the twelve stones.
I just checked David Dorsey’s amazing book, he has
a. 3:1-5
b. 3:6-8
c. 3:9-17
d. 4:1-9
c’. 4:10-13
b’ 4:14-18
a’. 4:19-24
