Genesis 12:3 and Genesis 22:18 are quoted in Acts 3:25 and Galatians 3:8 but which is which?

  1. See the following to understand why there is no simple answer to this question:

    I. Howard Marshall, “Acts,” in Commentary on the New Testament use of the Old Testament, eds. D. A. Carson, and G. K. Beale (Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2007), pp. 549-550.

Moises Silva, “Galatians,” in Commentary on the New Testament use of the Old Testament, eds. D. A. Carson, and G. K. Beale (Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2007), pp. 791-800.

    1. Verbal inspiration of new Testament writers must mean that use of the Hebrew scriptures with modification is the result of spirit guidance. Often differences are dismissed as due to quoting the LXX but closer investigation often show differences even between the NT and the LXX. I have attached an article written in 1983 which attempt to expound the use of the two quotations. For a discussion of the use of Hebrew scriptures in the NT see Andrew Perry https://www.academia.edu/5763813/Did_the_NT_Writers_Quote_the_LXX

  2. These articles are very helpful, and are appreciated. The literature on the NT use of the OT is voluminous, and understandably so. The supernatural inspiration of the Scriptures must never be “on the back burner” in such studies.
