  1. Thanks – really interesting. Can I add to the Isaiah 40 – John 1 connection. Three key words that are inverted in John 1:14 – ‘glory’, ‘flesh’ and ‘word’

    Isaiah 40:5-8

A – 5 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

B – 6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: 7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.

C – 8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

    John 1:14
    C – And the Word

B – was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory,

A – the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Comment: The Lord Jesus shows us that the only way to share the glory and overcome the flesh is by the word. The word must be first in our lives. It needs to be planted in us (James 1) as a seed Only then can we overcome the flesh and share in the glory that will one day follow, when we shall be like him (full of grace and truth).

  2. Thanks Pete, really helpful to think that allusions as well as quotations may be inverted. I was just looking at Luke 23 where verse 30 shows inversion of the quote from Hosea 10:8. The previous verses, Luke 23:28-29 “”But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. 29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck”
looks like it is an inverted allusion to Hosea 9:13-14 “Ephraim, as I saw Tyrus, is planted in a pleasant place: but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the murderer. 14 Give them, O Lord: what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts”.
