John 3:19-21

Note: any ideas for a more satisfying structure? It looks like there is a missing C” in verse 21 – it doesn’t refer to the godly loving the light/hating the darkness,  in contrast to the wicked who hate the light and love the darkness. Is this to be inferred as part of “doing the truth”?

A. 19 And this is the condemnation,

B. that light is come into the world,

C. and loved men darkness rather than light,

D. because their deeds were evil.

D’. 20 For every one that doeth evil

C’. hateth the light,

B’. neither cometh to the light,

A’. that not might be exposed his deeds.

D”. 21 But he that doeth truth

B”. cometh to the light,

A”.  that might appear his deeds that in God have been done.

  1. perhaps we should be looking at the word “deeds” –

    A. lest his deeds should be reproved.

B.(21) But he that doeth truth cometh to the light,

    A. that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

  2. This seems to work I think

    A. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and loved men darkness rather than light,
    B. because their deeds were evil.
    C. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light,
B’. that not might be exposed his deeds.
A’. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that might appear his deeds that in God have been done.
