Revelation 22:17 – Genesis 1:2

What does everybody think of this …

A (Rev 22:17) And THE SPIRIT and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

B (Rev. 22:18-19) For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, GOD shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, GOD shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

C (Rev. 22:20) He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. AMEN.

D (Rev. 22:20) Even so, come, LORD JESUS.

E (Rev. 22:21) The grace

D′ (Rev. 22:21) of our LORD JESUS Christ be with you all.

C′  (Rev. 22:21) AMEN.

B′ (Gen. 1:1) In the beginning GOD created the heaven and the earth.

A′ (Gen. 1:2) And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And THE SPIRIT of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Note also, that in the previous verse in Revelation 22, verse 16, Christ is described as “the bright and morning star” and in the next verse in Genesis 1, verse 3, there is light.

  1. Note that I have updated this chiasm. The two “Amen”s form a pair within the chiasm which for some reason I had missed before. This means that “grace” is at the centre of a chiasm at the end of Revelation irrespective of the link with Genesis,

  2. Chiasms are purposeful or accidental. The fact that only A’, B’ match shows this is not a chiasm, but is something else equally important – Revelation 20-21 completes and reverses Genesis 1-3.

  3. This might be simpler and straight to the point:

    A. (Gen. 1:1) In the beginning GOD created the heaven and the earth.

    B. (Gen. 1:2) And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And THE SPIRIT of God moved upon the face of the waters.

B’. (Rev 22:17) And THE SPIRIT and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

A’. (Rev.

  4. I followed Nigel’s note about the “the bright and morning star” and “light” (Rev. 22:16 and Gen.1:3). In addition, A and A´ echo the word “water” and E and E´ have “God”. It seems that the beginning and the end of the bible are knotted together just when scripture tells us “I AM ALPHA AND OMEGA, THE BEGINNING AND THE END, THE FIRST AND THE LAST” (Rev. 22:13). It is not a classical chiasm, but it looks like the end and the beginning are mirrored. The separation of the light from the darkness in Gen. 1:4 is mirrored in Rev. 22:14-15 with the separation of the two classes.

    A. (Rev. 22:13) I AM ALPHA AND OMEGA, THE BEGINNING AND THE END, the FIRST and the last.

Bi. (Rev. 22:14) Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and MAY ENTER in through the gates into the city.

Bii. (Rev. 22:15) FOR WITHOUT are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

    C. (Rev. 22:16) I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the BRIGHT and MORNING star.

    D. (Rev. 22:17) And THE SPIRIT and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the WATER of life freely.

    E. (Rev. 22:18) For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, GOD shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: (Rev. 22:19) And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, GOD shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

    F. (Rev. 22:20) He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. AMEN.

    G. (Rev. 22:20) Even so, come, LORD JESUS.

    H. (Rev. 22:21) The grace

G’. (Rev. 22:21) of our LORD JESUS Christ be with you all.

    F’. (Rev. 22:21) AMEN.

E′. (Gen. 1:1) In the beginning GOD created the heaven and the earth.

D′. (Gen. 1:2) And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And THE SPIRIT of GOD moved upon the face of the WATERS.

C`. (Gen.1:3) And God said, Let there be light: and there was LIGHT.

B`. (Gen. 1:4) And God saw the light, that it was good: and GOD DIVIDED THE LIGHT FROM THE DARKNESS.

A`. (Gen1:5) And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the MORNING were the FIRST day.
