A (5) And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My SON,
B (5) despise not thou THE CHASTENING <3809>
C (5) OF THE LORD,
D (5) nor faint when thou art rebuked of Him:
C′ (6) For whom THE LORD loveth
B′ (6) HE CHASTENETH <3811> ,
A′ (6) and scourgeth every SON whom He receiveth.
Note that the quotation is from Proverbs 3:11,12, “My son, despise not the chastening <04148> of Yahweh; neither be weary of his correction: For whom Yahweh loveth He correcteth <03198>; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth”, but the Hebrew for “chastening” and “correcteth” are different and hence there is no chiasmus in the Hebrew. The equivalent of “scourging” is not found in Proverbs 3:11,12, but the Spirit adds this in Hebrews to expand on what chastening and correcting entails, a point which is found elsewhere in Proverbs (see 22:15; 23:13,14).
