ZEPHANIAH 3:2-7, 14-16*

Zephaniah 3:2-7:

A (2) She obeyed not the voice; SHE RECEIVED NOT CORRECTION <04148>; she trusted not in Yahweh; she drew not near to her God.

B (3) Her princes WITHIN <07130> her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till THE MORROW <01242>.

C (4) Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law.

B′ (5) The just Yahweh is IN THE MIDST <07130> thereof; he will not do iniquity: every MORNING <01242> doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame.

A′ (6, 7) I have cut off the nations: their towers are desolate; I made their streets waste, that none passeth by: their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, that there is none inhabitant. I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, THOU WILT RECEIVE INSTRUCTION <04148>; so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.

Zephaniah 3:14-16:

A (14) Sing, O daughter OF ZION;

B (14) shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter OF JERUSALEM.

C (15) YAHWEH hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy:

D (15) the king of Israel,

C′ (15) even YAHWEH, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.

B′ (16) In that day it shall be said TO JERUSALEM,

A′ (16) Fear thou not: and TO ZION, Let not thine hands be slack.

  1. Dorsey has a chiasm from 3:1-7 which links “city” in verse 1 and 6 as well as “correction’ in verses 2 and 7. “Judges” in v3 and “judgment” inverse 5 are cognate words. The centre is the same.

  2. Zephaniah 3:1-7 (ESV) divides up into larger sections according to the development of thought. The second section describes the corruption of judges, prophets and priests which contrasts with verse 5.

    A. 1 Woe to her who is rebellious and defiled,
    the oppressing city!
    2 She listens to no voice;
    she accepts no correction.
    She does not trust in the Lord;
    she does not draw near to her God.

    B. 3 Her officials within her
    are roaring lions;
    her judges are evening wolves
    that leave nothing till the morning.
    4 Her prophets are fickle, treacherous men;
    her priests profane what is holy;
    they do violence to the law.

    B’. 5 The Lord within her is righteous;
    he does no injustice;
    every morning he shows forth his justice;
    each dawn he does not fail;
    but the unjust knows no shame.

    A’. 6 “I have cut off nations;
    their battlements are in ruins;
    I have laid waste their streets
    so that no one walks in them;
    their cities have been made desolate,
    without a man, without an inhabitant.

    7 I said, ‘Surely you will fear me;
    you will accept correction.
    Then your dwelling would not be cut off
    according to all that I have appointed against you.’
    But all the more they were eager
    to make all their deeds corrupt.
