PSALM 64:3-9

Version One:

A (3,4) Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words: That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and FEAR NOT.

B (5,6) They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who SHALL SEE them? They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.

C (7) But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded.

B1 (8) So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all THAT SEE them shall flee away.

A1 (9) And all men SHALL FEAR, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing.

Version Two:

A (3) Who whet THEIR TONGUE like a sword,

B (3) and bend their bows to shoot THEIR ARROWS, even bitter words:

C (4) THAT THEY MAY SHOOT in secret at the perfect: suddenly DO THEY SHOOT at him, and fear not.

D (5,6) They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them? THEY SEARCH OUT iniquities;

D1 (6) they accomplish A DILIGENT search : both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.

C1 (7) But God SHALL SHOOT at them

B1 (7) with AN ARROW; suddenly shall they be wounded.

A1 (8) So they shall make THEIR OWN TONGUE to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.

  1. Hi Nigel,
    Ruth has come up with this pattern quite independently which matches almost exactly your second version. The breadth seems to cover the whole Psalm, and the centre is slightly different but looks good. “Suddenly” in verses 4 and 7 are the same, and “workers” and “work” in verses 2 and 9 are the same.

    Psalm 64

    A(1) Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer:
    preserve my life from fear of the enemy.

    B(2) Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked;
    from the insurrection of the WORKers of iniquity:

    C(3) Who whet their TONGUE like a sword,
    and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:

    D (4)That they may SHOOT in secret at the perfect:
    SUDDENLY do they SHOOT at him, and fear not.

    E(5) They encourage themselves in an evil matter:
    they commune of laying snares privily;

    F(5) they say, Who shall see them?

    E’(6)They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search:
    both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.

    D’ (7)But God shall SHOOT at them with an arrow;
    SUDDENLY shall they be wounded.

    C’(8) So they shall make their own TONGUE to fall upon themselves:
    all that see them shall flee away.

    B’(9)And all men shall fear, and shall declare the WORK of God;
    for they shall wisely consider of his doing.

    A.(10)The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him;
    and all the upright in heart shall glory.
